2. What will change
3. How to prepare for changes
Expected date of change: February 15, 2019
One of the primary tasks for our team is to keep each user's personal information safe. Last year we talked in detail about the data protection principles and what information VKontakte services can use: https://vk.com/data_protection
Our team does not stop working to enhance the protection of personal information to a multimillion VKontakte audience. At the same time, of course, some of the most sensitive data are personal messages. We want not only to give people more confidence that their information is protected, but also to prevent any intentional or accidental abuse by those third-party application owners who cannot provide an acceptable level of security and do not work according to the standards of our team.
In an effort to provide the highest level of privacy protection and storage of personal correspondence, from February 15, we restrict third-party developers’ access to the user messages API.
This change will not affect the bot platform in communities, users of the vk.com web version and official VKontakte mobile applications.
Methods for working with user messages are available to any Standalone applications using Implicit authorization flow
. Applications can use public API VKontakte methods to show sending and other actions with messages.
From February 15, 2019 the methods of messages
section will be available for calling by default with the community access key only.
If you plan to start developing the messenger, after February 15, 2019, you will need to get Support
test access, which implies the work of the methods of messages section with the administrators’ keys of your Standalone application.
To get full access to the user Messages API, the application will have be moderated.
If your application uses methods for working with the user message section, you need to write to Support
to discuss the conditions for further cooperation. Chat bots that use the user access key to interact with messages should be transferred to the platform for bots in communities
